For the third #My-Little-Plushie contest, we had to do a pony crossover. So I made my favorite Transformers character, TFP Knockout, into a pony.
Surprisingly posable despite all the kibble, he's needle felted from wool over a steel wire armature. His mane and tail are hand-dyed Suri alpaca locks. I would sell if I get a good offer, but not until I finish Breakdown, as they're a set. Clearly I need practice with speech bubbles, I didn't mean for them to be so small and hard to read.
In case you're wondering, that papercraft sofa the Knockouts are sitting on is supposed to be for Microns, a Japanese website made it and an Autobot-red one some time back. I saw it on TFW2005 but now I can't find the link. D:
BW Dinobot? That would be interesting, if a bit complicated. XD He was my favorite.
This particular one may have a home already, but I'd probably be willing to make other ponyformers. Depends on the character, some wouldn't work well as ponies. Shockwave, for example. I don't know how that would work. XD
It simply boggles my mind how you felted not just one, but two of those super intricate cutie marks. Each piece must have been one or two strands of wool rolled together. Might I ask how you get the cutie mark secure without leaving a big depression in his butt? That's what always happens to me. ^^'
Thanks! I actually posted on my Tumblr about how I do these tiny details, here and here. The second one has an explanation of how I attach them to the figure. Since I felt the design onto fabric first, it doesn't take very much poking to get it to stay on the figure, so it doesn't become indented very much. If it does, I take a strong sewing needle and insert it into the felt so it's under the fabric, then gently "pull" the whole area up a little bit. That might be one of the things I have to do a video of for it to make sense.
Oh my, that is brilliant! I'll have to try that some time, but what do you use to print the item onto the fabric? Do you have a special printer? Oh, and how do you get the cutie mark/eyes the right size? Just trial and error? I'll also have to try the sewing needle thing, although I'm not sure how well it will work without fabric in the middle. Thanks for the advice!
Oh right, I forgot to describe how to do the printing. XD I just tape a piece of fabric to a sheet of paper, and print with an ordinary ink jet printer. The way I keep eyes and cutie marks in scale is related to how I build armatures. I use the armature layout image as a reference, and add the eye and cutie mark images as new layers in Photoshop. I scale them to be the right size on the layout, and then hide the original layer so only the eyes and cutie marks are visible, and print. Since the layout already has scale for print settings, I just leave them the way they were for the layout so the cutie marks and eyes will print at the same size.
Ah, okay. I didn't think that fabric could make it through a regular printer, but I'll have to try that and the layering technique when I get around to finding some wire for an armature. Thank you so much for answering the questions, it's a lot of help!
